Abstract
This study examined the relationship between counselors' emotional labor (EL) and flow, and the mediating effect of basic psychological needs (BPN). Questionnaires measuring EL, flow, and BPN were administered to 191 counselors (89% female). Descriptive, correlational, and mediating effect analyses were conducted. Surface acting had a negative correlation, and deep acting a positive correlation, with flow. Surface acting had negative correlations with autonomy, competence and relatedness, while deep acting had a positive correlation with relatedness, demonstrating a significant relationship between BPN and flow. BPN mediated the relationship between EL and flow, with differences at the lower dimension. Specifically, relatedness mediated the relationship between EL and goal directedness. Lose self-consciousness and autonomy mediated the relationship between EL and blocking of unfocused thinking. Competence mediated the relationships between EL and goal directedness, blocking of unfocused thinking and lose self-consciousness. In order to improve the counselors' flow, counselor competence is underscored.
